Statement on CPU and April Hutchinson Decision

On Monday, November 6, 2023, athlete April Hutchinson was sent the following notification from her sports association, the Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU):

“Discipline Panel is recommending that AH (April Hutchinson) have her membership to the CPU suspended for 2 years.”

April’s offence: Publicly objecting to the CPU policy allowing male athletes to compete in the women’s category.

The International Consortium on Female Sports (ICFS) declares this ruling to be outrageous and unjustified. We will be standing with April Hutchinson as she contests this ruling going forward.

During the time that April’s case was under review it was not permissible to disclose communications and documents involved.

Now that a decision has been rendered by the CPU, we believe it is important for the public to see the letter sent by lawyer Lisa Bildy, thoroughly refuting the assertion that April was in anyway deserving of this penalty.

Let it be known that the CPU has never acknowledged this letter nor made any attempt to address the injustices to April described therein.
